I was a rescue brigadesman at the Hednesford Mines Rescue Station in the seventies. From this station a team was deployed to recover the bodies of crewmen who lost their lives in the Thetis disaster in 1939. I subsequently investigated the circumstances of the loss of the Thetis, and also that of the Affray. In so doing I came across an article on the internet some time ago wich reported that prior to the departure of the Affray one of the senior officers was reported as saying words to the effect that 'come what may, that A boat is leaving this week.'
